MSDRG was formed in 2006 by a small group of clinicians and technology innovators who identified the need for interoperable IT systems in the field of emergency medicine.
Our research and development activities focus in the emergency department environment. We use our knowledge, skill and expertise in this area to address the issues present in the unique area of information retrieval and integration. The lack of integrated and interoperable systems in the past has resulted in inefficient processes of care, miscommunication and suboptimal documentation. The end result of all these are medical errors. Interoperable systems that combine intuitive clinical documentation, evidence based decision support systems and seamless file transfer capabilities across points of care (eg laboratory, radiology, general practitioners) would allow information to be integrated efficiently as a true multimedia patient health record.
Our aims are to facilitate and develop systems for:
1. standardization and simplification of clinical practices with
improved uptake of clinical guidelines and decision rules in
clinical practice
2. real time collection of data from electronic health records for
quality control
3. the use of clinical indicators as a markers of quality
improvement and benchmarking
4. improve access to information relevant to patient management
5. more reliable information and quality control for ED activities
such as procedures, reassessments and interventions
1. Critically appraise and discuss medical literature regarding
clinical guidelines, decision rules and scoring systems
2. Develop and design electronic decision support systems using
relevant evidence based medicine
3. Develop implementation strategies for such systems into clinical
practice
4. The design and development of these interfaces are led primarily
by emergency physicians. The focus of this is to bring about changes
that add value and efficiency to emergency medicine practice.
